Summer has arrived and Long Island is in its prime season. The beaches are full, the traffic a bit heavy, and that summer feeling is in the air. As beautiful as our island is, sometimes we lose appreciation for it. Between the long work weeks and busy schedules, for Islanders, Long Island doesn’t really have that “get away” vibe. Lucky for us, the island is full of opportunities, and the perfect escape is only a ferry ride away.
Fire Island offers the atmosphere of vacation with all the comforts of home. A relaxing ride over the Great South Bay is sure to put anyone in the easy, breezy summer mindset. Ocean Beach is one of Fire Island's most beautiful communities, and in only 30 minutes time the ferry transports you to sun, fun, and a community of beach goers and bike riders who all greet you with a smile. Be it a day trip or an extended stay, Ocean Beach offers great places to stay, drink, eat, and shop, plus many other fun activates to fill your day.
The cool breeze and scenic view of Long Island's South Shore makes the ferry ideal transportation over to Ocean Beach. Not to mention, the helpful and pleasant crew led by Captain Andrew is there to answer any questions, and help you unload any of your belongings.
As soon as you arrive off the ferry you are greeted by Ocean Beach's Police Department. Jon Johnson, an officer celebrating his second year here in Ocean Beach, told me that he loves this town and that it is a great community, and said the number one reason to come here is because, “it’s home away from home”.
If you make the trip over on a boat then it will need to be docked. Lucky for you, you will be greeted by one of Ocean Beach’s friendly Dock Masters. Not only are they knowledgeable and caring but, they are quite the characters!
The Surf Shack is a cute, cozy, apartment in a prime location. It is fully equipped with an outdoor shower and ocean view. With great neighbors and the clear sound of ocean waves, it’s the perfect place for the Ooh girls to stay.
Beaches here in Ocean Beach are different in the best way possible. They are quiet and intimate while still being fun and lively. From weddings to beach activities, Ocean Beach offers much more then sand and sun.
If you are interested in an extended stay in Ocean beach you have two options: rent a house or stay in a hotel.
The Blue Waters Hotel is just steps off the ferry dock. With a friendly staff, beautiful accommodations, and a breathtaking rooftop deck it is certainly Ocean Beach's finest. Breakfast is served daily on the rooftop from 9:30am-11:00 am and the hotel also provides bikes to rent. The Blue Waters Hotel is without question the number one hotel option.
When looking for activities to do around town bike riding is a town favorite. Not only is it a quicker way to get around town but it also makes you understand the carefree vibe of Ocean Beach just a little bit more.
Ocean Beach also has a great park that overlooks the Great South Bay, including a gazebo. Perfect place to take the kids, or to sit and watch the sun set.
When it comes to food and drink Ocean Beaches options are plentiful.
Looking for pizza? Well, look no further than Town Pizza. Great service, great slices and much, much more. Plus, they deliver!
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Scoops has many flavors and a wall full of pictures of happy Scoops costumers. With the helpful staff the hardest part of my experience was deciding which flavor to get.
When visiting Fire Island there is one drink you must try, and that is a Rocket Fuel. No place does it better then Maguire's. The staff, the drinks, the food, the scenery, Maguire's offers it all!
If shopping is for you then you need to stop at Ooh la la. Ooh is celebrating our seventh season in Ocean Beach and we could not be more thrilled to be a part of this community. With our beachy décor and trendy items, Ooh has something to offer everyone. We love meeting new customers and seeing familiar faces, be sure to stop in and say hello!
Ocean Beach has so much to offer and you will never want to leave. Next time you are looking for some summer fun keep it in mind!
